Custer State Park and Crazy Horse
Yesterday we drove the scenic wildlife loop at Custer State Park. We saw many bison in herds and on the roads. They roam around the cars and lick the salty grime off. The locals call this a "Black Hills Carwash". We also saw mule deer, whitetail deer, pronghorn and others.
The park is stunningly beautiful with towering rock spires, switchback roads, hand carved tunnels and views that take your breath away. It is very reminiscent of Yellowstone. We spent several hours on this drive.
After that, we drove to the Crazy Horse monument. We walked through the large visitor centor, saw a live presentation of traditional native dance and took an excursion to the base of the mountain where the sculpting is ongoimg. This monument dwarfs Mt Rushmore. Blasting started in 1948 and is expected to continue for at least a couple more generations. It is truly awesome.
Today we plan to go to Devil's Tower in Wyoming. This will be an all-day roundtrip.
P.S.
We're back and we not only visited Devil's Tower, we also drove through Sturgis (of motorcycle rally fame) and Deadwood. More on this when I describe it tomorrow.
